Gone are the days when prescription eyeglasses were only a prerogative of the grandmothers. These days almost everyone is donning a pair of these glasses. Nearly 168 million people alone in the United States wear prescription eyeglasses.
The strength of these prescription eyeglasses varies from one individual to the other. While some people wear glasses with a negative strength, there are some who wear prescription eyeglasses that are measured in positive. A negative lens makes objects around look smaller. On the other hand positive lenses make objects look larger.
The strength of these prescription eyeglasses is measured in a unite known as diopters. Diopter is often abbreviated as D by optometrists.
Prescriptions eye glasses are basically aimed at correcting the vision of a person. There are three different kinds of vision problems that can be corrected using prescription eyeglasses.
* MYOPIA- This type of problem refers to near sightedness. A person suffering from myopia usually experiences blurred vision and is unable to focus on objects that are near to him/her. People suffering from myopia usually wear prescription glasses with a positive strength.
* HYPERMYOPIA- Hypermyopia is the opposite of myopia. Under this condition of the eye people have difficulty in viewing objects that are far off. Prescription glasses with a negative strength. Are used to correct this vision problem. Hypermyopia is usually accompanied with headaches, eye fatigue after reading or watching television.
* GLAUCOMA- Glaucoma refers to the build up of retina. Diagnosing this disease can be quite tricky as it is not accompanied by any particular symptoms. If not treated on time, glaucoma can even result in loss of sight.
When it is about prescription eye glasses, there are primarily three set of people or three different professions related to the same. These three are- an optician, ophthalmologist and an optometrist. Let us know what each one of them does to your eye glasses.
* OPTICIAN- an optician is the one who is actually concerned with making of your glasses. These opticians study your prescriptions and then accordingly make lenses, frames and contact lenses. Opticians have the requisite license needed to dispense prescription eye glasses and medications.
* OPTOMETRIST- An optometrist is the eye doctor who takes your eye exam. After he has taken your exam, he determines the strength of the prescription glasses that you should be wearing. These people are licensed to give away appropriate prescriptions for eyeglasses and medicines. * OPTHALMOLOGIST- An ophthalmologist essentially refers o the eye surgeon who performs all the eye surgeries. These surgeries may be done to rectify any vision problems or curing eye diseases.
