Optics: Sky Is The Limit
Optics is
a very important area of the theoretical physics. Enormous
research is going on throughout the world in the area of
optics. The last decade has been called the decade of fiber
lase optics. In fact, the last decade is rightly called the era
of fiber optics. Optics is a subject of physics that has become
part and parcel of the daily lives of many people throughout
the world.
Many
devices you use in your daily life depend on the fiber optics
technology. It is very interesting for you to know that your
all very important gadgets of daily use are based on fiber
optics technology. Fiber optics technology finds a great use in
the cell phones, pagers, laser machines, and the Internet. The
Internet connection can be called one of the ultimate
researches in the field of fiber optics.
In fact,
the developments in the fiber optics are the end products of
the research of quantum mechanics by Elbert Einstein. Einstein
came up with an idea of stimulated emission. The concept stated
that electrons can emit and absorb energy of photons at a
single frequency. This was, indeed, a very powerful truth that
shook the foundations of physics.
This was
developed into microwave emissions at later stages. Later, this
was applied to visible light and laser. Fiber optics laser
light could not make a steady light. This was responsible for
making semiconductor optic lasers. These allowed continuous
lase operation.
It became
very important with the passage of time to transmit light
through long distances. Glass optical fiber could solve this
problem. There was still one more problem. It was the loss of
light. Efforts were being devised to take fiber optics
communication out of lab. Fiber optics became the part and
parcel of the real life. There was no loss of light. This
became a big success in the area of physics.
Fiber
optics received a major success throughout the world after the
year 1970. This area became an area of specialization in the
field of technology. There was a great demand of qualified
optic specialists. A great deal of research is still going on
in this area of optics.
